Shop Forecast - Pigs

We are a piglet family and we are not ashamed of that.

Our family is made up by five people/pigs; Mummy and Daddy pigs and the three little piglets. Just like in the story. The piglets eat just like the pigs sometimes and their room is just as untidy as a pigsty. They make their clothes very dirty from time to time - especially the youngest one - and they love being outside walking and turning up stones looking for interesting bugs or fossils.

Did you know that pigs, when kept properly and given them enough space, are actually quite clean animals? - Oh, but they roll in the mud and are always smelly! - I can hear you saying.

- Well, dogs, hippos, elefantes and all sorts of other animals roll in the mud, too and nobody considers them particularly dirty animals. What hippos and elefants and other animals don´t do is to mark an area that they use as a toilet and go back there any time they need to have a poo or a pee.

And did you know that a pig is as highly intelligent as a dog is? They can be trained easily and their sense of smell just as refined and sensitive as dogs'. That is why they are used for mushroom picking. I'm pretty convinced that if their body structure were different they would be used for hunting and if their meet was less tasty than they would have a completely different life now.

All in all, a pig´s IQ is pretty much as high as a dog´s - it´s scientifically proved.It´s just their cleverness cover different areas. And that is why we are a pig family.

Recently I've started different designs out of thin rubber sheets and print them on t-shirts. Some of the designs are quite simple and the work with the rubber sheet only includes cutting. In these cases The printing is only the base of the design, the rest is down by hand-painting. In this case, the outline and the scales and fins of the fish.

In other cases the I don´t just cut but carve the sheets as well.

Penguins Waiting for Santa by BHB Kidstyle

Mikulás, alias St. Nicholas, is an important day for children in Hungary. On the eve of his nameday, the 6th of Deceber, he goes round to children´s houses and brings them present according to their behaviour. These days the presents vary - it can be toys or books or "just" chocolate and sweets. However, there is the measurement of a child´s good or bad behaviour. If the child was good, then he or she gets only goodies. If the behaviour was not up to the requirements, the presents could include, potatoes, coal or a bunch of twigs.
I´m not going to tell you what my children got. You will have to guess!

Food for Thought I.

I´m on a quest to find out why the number of views my shops get are not higher.

There is the strong possibility that the reason is, what I make is not what the market needs. However, I 'd rather look into that later and start with the pictures of items. There is room to improve the quality, I´m the first to admit that, but there has to be something else, as well.

It is a well known fact that clothes sell better if they are worn by a model. However, it is not always possible to arrange this. Getting baby clothes modeled, unless you have a baby yourself, is even more difficult, then finding models for kids clothes. There is the option of using a doll but it always looks strange and slightly off putting to me so, I don´t do that.

The only way I can take pictures of my baby items is just using the items themselves, which leads to four main options: spreading them out flat on a surface, folding them up, taking pictures at different angles or hanging them up.

Santa Penguin

Another penguin creation with a Christmas theme.

Santas can look a bit scary especially when you are small. Baby penguin had to hide between mummy´s legs and even the older toddler penguin feels a bit shy. You can tell by looking at her eyes and feet.

Week-End Walk - Alvorge, Outeiro Mills

It has been raining all night and the best part of the morning. We are leaving after lunch and will go just for another short, 6-7 kms walk to get home before dark. We´ll go to the nearest hills, called "Serra de Sicó" and will start at the edge of the village "Alvorge" to gently climb up and see the Outeiro Mills.

The path goes between lands of olive groves ...

... and leads through woodland.

The woodland turns into farmland again, with bare olive trees...

... and little old farmhouses with the threshing floors where they used to spread the crop to beat the seeds out.

Once we pass the farm land we start climbing. The vegetation changes. Farmland turns into rocky surface with gorse bushes and heather. And once we get to the top we see the wooden windmills.

They have two stone wheels but fixed in the middle to the ground.

They run on stone rails so you can always turn the whole mill towards the wind.

The rain is coming in again, so it is time to head home. As you walk, look out for interesting finds. The paths are often marked by shepards with stones or well, whatever comes handy.

New Theme, New Obsession - Pinguins

If anyone thought looking at my t-shirts that I was obsessed with sheep that wasn´t very far from the truth.

However, I´m not really obsessed with them. They just amuse me and make me smile. What I´m obsessed with these days is pingvins.

They are funny, and clumsy on land but graceful in the water. They keep warm and look after their little ones in the harshest of harsh condition. They like teasing each other and no matter what an awkward and clumsy situation they end up in, they always try to keep their dignity. And that is why I find them funny.

This is the first of the many more to come baby bodysuits, and later as the weather warms up, t-shirts with different pingvin designs. - I even have the Beatles as pingvins!

Classical Lines

The title might suggest that this post will be about fashion. It won´t be. It is more about how things change by time and how much they develop and become more practical. However, it doesn´t mean that the old style is not good or useful anymore.

Let´s take these bibs as an example.

They are the old fashioned, tie it up at the back, type. You can get much practical ones these days. Ones with velcro or a pop up button or even ones that you can just pull over your child's head and it will cover the whole front of the dress. No more unwashable stains on toddlers clothes!

But what about the new born/few months old babies? They don´t need the velcro, pop up button or pull it over bib! They need the old fashioned ones! Babies when very young don´t wiggle and eat as messily as when they are older. They don´t like being moved around to secure the velcro or being dressed and undressed. And that is when the old fashioned bib comes handy.

You just tuck it under the baby´s chin when you breast or bottle feed and it gives enough protection for any milk spillage. You don´t even need to tie it up.

And once your baby is older and you do need a really practical and useful "cover the hole front bib" for feeding, these old fashioned ones can still come handy. They are great for teething toddlers who drool and dribble constantly. You can even us it as an accessory. A funky little bib would dress up a plain white baby bodysuit

or compliment one with a design.

Week-end Walk - Vouga River

We are walkers. We spend a lot of time outdoors and unless it´s raining we go for a walk at the week-end.
Long ones, short ones, up in the hills or in the woods.
And now, you can come for a walk with us, too. We are going to start with an easy one. It is quite short, 1,5 hours maximum, and flat. It is along the Vouga river that runs almost half way between Porto and Coimbra and ends up in the Atlantic Ocean. The bit where we are going is between Oliveira de Frades and Vouzela. We will start at the other side of the bridge.

There are places where the water is quite shallow and you can cross over using the stepping stones.

Great fun it is, too!

But the river is not always this low, only during the Summer period and at the beginning of Autumn. During this time there are quite a few dragonflies.

As I said earlier, it is only a short walk, today. Next week-end it will be longer!

Shopping Sensibly while Items are on Sale

There is nothing like a good shopping expedition. And there is nothing like getting something in the sale. It is always nice to have a bargain. However, sales can be dangerous. Quite often we are inclined to buy something in the "End of Season Sales" because it is cheaper, just to realize later that by the time we could wear it - like the next year - it doesn´t fit anymore. Now, how annoying is that!

But don´t threat! It can´t happen with my Halloween t-shirts! Although they have Halloween theme design they are still great to wear in the summer.

The Challenge Entires...

This week I´m the master of the EST Challenge. The theme is walking, hiking, nature.

The first challenge entry has just arrived. Still crispy and fresh by squeezing itself through cyberspace to get here.

The awakening is the title of AleciaV's entry. I think she managed to capture the first sign of spring.

The second entry is a very cool desert bag for girls by Star Bags.

The third entry is an ingenious fern earring made of glass seed bead by Balanced.

The fourth entry has a real personality. Henry the hiking bunny came here all the way from Sofia's shop in Finland. No wonder he is looking so tired!

The fifth entry is a set of pinback buttons with beautiful flowers, called the Lilac Dance by Sole De Vita.

The sixth entry is a really colorful original watercolor by Coloursand Textures called, Azaleas, Isabella-Plantation

The seventh entry was submitted by Stephmel. She took a picture of her mysterious secret garden.

The eighth entry was submitted by Nancy van den Boom. It is an oil painting that pictures a view that one might see while walking early in the morning.

The ninth entry is a very useful bottle pouch by Lab Space that I would take for a short, perhaps couple of hours afternoon stroll or bird watching, in the local countryside.

The tenth entry is a cute owl clay cameo brooch by Glamasaurus.

The eleventh entry is a very cleverly done little silver mountain pendant by Donauluft.

The twelfth entry is lovely hair decoration by Alatvian

This Week's European Street Team Challenge

Creative Writing

Creative Writing is the title of this week's Europen Street Team's challenge. The host is fluxplay who makes funky jewellery out of recycled tin, copper brass and steel.

I painted a "Tower of Babel" t-shirt. I mixed letters of different languages from different times. Some of them are still existing and some of them are not in use anymore.

Some of them are roman letters and can be found in most of the alphabets and others are not.

You can find here ancient Greek, Saxon, Russian, Polish, Etruscan, Hungarian, Portuguese,Turkish, Celtiberian, Arabic and Cyprion letters amongst others.

Come and try to find out what alphabet they belong to!

More Swirly Bits

I must admit, I got carried away with the swirly design. I like doing them because I never know what a t-shirt is going to look like when I start painting it. Those lines just swirl and grow and climb all over the place wherever they do want to go. So, it´s always a surprise, even for me, what I´m going to end up with.

... fortunately not me just my t-shirt collection. I bought the other day some baby bodysuits and started experimenting with them. Two of them are already in my Etsy shop under the "Baby Section" and some of them are still waiting to be listed.

Spring Swap

The EST's (European Street Team) Wild Fairy organised a Spring Swap for those members of the team who wanted to participate. The idea is that we swap a present with each other. The present has to be made by us. Everybody has one partner that is chosen by the Fairy. My present arrived early this week and was made by Dina Fragola. She sent me a sweet keyring.

Just the thing I needed, since I broke my old one a couple of week before.

Last Week's Works

A simple but very bright sun. I mixed gold paint into the yellow one that makes the sun shimmer brightly in the light. (Unfortunately it doesn´t really come out in the picture.)

I´ve got a custom order and some inspiration from a lovely Etsyan friend.

Flying the Kite

It has been sunny this week which couldn´t be said about the previous weeks and months. It´s been very difficult to get out of the house without getting very wet, so last week-end, when it was very cloudy but no rain, we decided to go for a little walk and fly the kite in the Serra de Sico.
Of course, buy the time we gathered everything and everybody together, it started raining. Never mind - we said - it is raining here but not south of us and we are going there. Well, the clouds were too. It was a race between Huba (our car) and the rain clouds. Huba won.
When we got out of the car it was not raining, yet, but we were already in the clouds. Never the less we started our little walk with the kite.

After a bit of walk we managed to overtake the clouds and found a suitable spot to fly the kite. Our cloudless kite flying time did not last for long. Soon we got attacked by clouds raising for the valley beneath us.

Of course we got wet in the end, but we still had a good time.

My EST Challange Entry

This week Sabine of La Marquise des Anges is the host of the European Street Team's Challenge. Sabine's shop is full of gorgeous tops that are designd and made by her with attention to every detail.

Her theme is "Sense of Touch and Texture". It is a very tough theme for someone who always works with the same type of material that she does not make but buy. So, I thought - hmmmmmmmmm probably this week I won´t participate.
But then, when I started painting a t-shirt with an Easter egg design, I realised that probably I could do something, after all.
They are two main different types of fabric paint for t-shirts. One of them is for white or very light coloured tees, the other one is for darker coloured ones. The paint for the lighter coloured tees is quite smooth and blends well in the fabric so much, that when touching the painted surfice you can hardly feel the difference.
The paint for coloured t-shirts, however, makes the fabric a bit stiff. (Fortunately this stiffness disappears after the first wash, leaving a more desirable softer touch).
Other little differences in paints (apart from the colours, of course) are the ones that are glitter and shimmer in the light and the ones that have a neon like glowing colour not to mention the 3D type.
The metallic, glittery shimmery type dries very quickly and has a slightly rough touch.
Well, with this knowledge and combination I could enter the Challenge. Now the only difficulty being how to show these slight difference with photographs. Well, with great difficulty.

White t-shirt for 3/4 years old children with Easter eggs. The eggs are decorated with traditional Hungarian Easter egg design.

I mixed golden paint with the green one thus giving a slightly rough touch and shimmery look to the grass.

The blue paint is mixed with golden one. Because of the nature of the golden paint - dries fast - the decoration slightly rises from the surface of the egg.
The blue egg, as well as the red one...

... is decorated with pure golden paint. Again, the decoration is slightly risen.

... and another one with bugs. This one is rather special.
Hand-painted leaves and bugs on " Size L" kids´ t-shirt. When was making the bugs, I mixed the green and the orange paint with a bit of golden one. It doesen´t give them a shimmery look but a more natural, metallic look.
The bugs are the stylized version of the bug Melasoma populi.

Three more t-shirts.
The first one is a the Night Owl that I´ve painted previously in "Size M". This one is "Size XL" as children´s size go, which is the equivalent of a unisex "Size M" t-shirt.

Kids' "Size M" yellow t-shirt with fern and the stylisied version of the bug Cyaniris xanthaspis.
This lovely colourful bug by the way, just to give a quick biology lesson, lives in the canopy of trees in the woods or the clearings of forests on wild flowers. It can grow up to 5-6.5 mm.

I owe one more t-shirt, with different kind of bugs, but because of the lack of decent light unfortunately those pictures didn´t come out. I´ll try it tomorrow.

Nicole of Ultimate Organic Soap is selling her wonderful 100% organic soaps in a cafe.
I´m selling my t-shirts in a language school. And there is where I was asked to do a custom order.

Pearl white cats for mum and daughter on red t-shirts. The adult tee is "Size M" and the kid´s tee is suitable for children aged 3/4.
I made a set of jumping and dancing hearts in the same sizes as well.

It´s Not an Owl Phase Just Another Owl

Since I had got my bigger size t-shirts the other day, I started experimenting with them. I made one with kangaroos ...

...and another one with an owl.

Can you see that it has something i it´s beak? Well, originally I wanted to paint a shrew with its tail hanging out but then I messed it up and had to alter it.

According to my husband, now it looks like a baby dinosaur. I like to think that I can sell it as a lizard. What do you think?

Spring and Night

Although slowly, but spring is coming. I believe that is why I was asked to make a colorful daisy flower t-shirt for a 12-year-old girl. This was the first time I made something in this size so, when the ordered t-shirts arrived I was astonished to see how big they were. Almost adult size, I thought and just to fulfill my curiosity I got the tape measure out and measured the "Size L" (for kids aged 11/12) and "Size XL"(for kids aged 13/14) t-shirts.

"Well, I never!" I thought. It turned out that the kids "Size L" is the same size as women´s "Size S" and the kids "Size XL" is the equivalent of women´s "Size M".
Now, I can take orders for women´s t-shirts as well and start making "mother/daughter" collections. Goody!

And to finish if off, here is a night owl for kids aged 9/10.

This Week's EST Challenge

The host of this week's EST challenge is Sabahnur from Turkey and she chose the theme "Petite and Cute".

I chose an XS t-shirt to paint on because it is the smallest, most "petite" I have at home. With this I covered half of the requirements, but just to be on the safe side, I have painted some small(ish) hearts on it since it is almost Valentine's day. And now you can decide whether it is cute or not!

I got lots of nice feedback from my fellow Etsyan friends yesterday and as I was "talking" to Kim from Viltalakim she put some more ideas into my head.There is so much you can do with them. I'm currently in " babushka world".

Black Babushkas

Ever since the EST babushka challenge theme that was hosted by ArtMind, I couldn't get the babushkas out of my head. I painted them on different colours and sizes of t-shirts in different colours and orders.
Today I would like to show you the black ones and would like to pick your brain.
I used black t-shirts for children aged 7/8 and 9/10. What I would like to get feedback on is the patterns, t-shirt sizes and weather it would be suitable for children up to aged 14 or even to women.
I would really appreciate some constructive feedback.

And there is a 4th version as well, where there are 3 babushkas, the middle one is spotty. Unfortunately I deleted that photo by accident. :))))

New Year , New...

New year, (almost) new computer, new (looking) blog, new shop, new year's resolution ... and the old me.

And it's all true. Except for the new year's resolution. I'm too old to do it and I never was very good at keeping one, anyway. But I have an almost new computer with renewed inside bits which will hopefully help me being able to join in the European Street Team's Monday Moodboard making fun.
And I've renewed my blog's look.
AND I've opened another shop on Zibbet! Zibbet is another online store, based in Australia but using American dollar as a shop currency which makes life very easy for those who already have an Etsy shop. If you want to sell the same items in both shops, you don't have to recalculate the prices.
Zibbet is quite new so, not many sellers have discovered it yet, which has it's advantages. Just to mention one: when you list an item, it stays on the front page until it gets "bumped" off the page by other listings, which means opportunity for everyone to have an item featured on the front page for a while. It can even be 2 or 3 hours sometimes!
Zibbet offers to different kinds of shop for sellers. One is an ordinary one where you don't have to pay for having a shop and you don't have to pay after listing an item and you don't have to pay commission after the sold items. What you earn, you keep. The only down side of it is that you can have only 25 items in your shop at a time.
The other type of shop is the Premium one - I have that one. You can have it for $ 7/month, you can have as many items in your shop as you want, you don't pay for listings, you don't pay commission after the sale and you can have some great tools to buzz up your shop appearance. Just to mention two of my favorites: You can rearrange the items in your shop as you like. They don't necessarily have to be in the order you listed them. You have space and widgets to advertise in your shop. For example: your etsy shop, blog, twitter, etc.
Zibbet is offering a good deal for Premium sellers as well as ordinary shop owners. If you have a non-premium shop, you can still try out the Free 7-day trial of a premium account. If you want to join the Premium sellers, its monthly fee now is just $ 7.- instead of $ 15.- but you can reduce it even to zero if you recruit some premium sellers. You get $ 1 off per month of your monthly shop fee after each premium seller you have recruited. So, you only have to get 7 sellers to have your shop fee for free!
I must say - me being not a very business minded person - this was not the reason why I opened my shop on Zibbet. I opened it there for two reasons.

I have a feeling that Zibbet is going to grow very fast and will be BIG soon. I think it is nice to be part of something right from the beginning.
What I sell is seasonal. You really need warm weather to sell t-shirts just as you need cold weather to sell knit or felted wear. Having one shop on both hemisphere will enable me to sell t-shirts all year round.

Well, maybe I am a business minded person after all.:) Anyway, if you would like to join Zibbet's Premium sellers, please contact me.

This week was the first time that I participated in the EST chalenge game. Every week the members of the European Street Team on Etsy create something according to the current challenge theme. I'm not a very organised person - to say the least - when it comes to Christmas shopping. I am one of those few women who don't like shopping in general and I like to keep putting it off. So, when it comes to Christmas shopping with a deadline to meet ... I start panicking. Like now. Only this time I'm not THAT panicky because "etsy" http://www.etsy.com/, the nr. 1. online shop, is making my life so much easier.
There are numerous lovely shops there with full of wonderful hand made items and lots of them offer some good, last minute Xmas deals.
My shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/BHBKidstyle is in "sale mode" too. You might think that buying t-shirts as a Christmas present is daft. Well, it isn't really. Wearing one on top of a long-sleeved polo shirt is actually quite trendy. Or so I'm told by my children. :)

The Shaples in the Snow III.

Recky is building a snowman. He is very tall so, he can build a VERY BIG snowman. It is so big that he almost has to tiptoe to put its saucepan hat on it.
Recky's favorite sport is basketball.

He is fast on the basketball court, clever at stealing the ball from the opponent team and, of course, good at basking the ball - which is not a surprise considering his height.

Circ and Recky are whizzing down the slope. Circk likes speed and not just when it comes to running. Recky likes water in whatever form. It could be snow or ice or even ice cream! She is a very good swimmer.

I' m still deciding on the names of the Shaples but it is already settled that the oval one is called "Ovy". He is a boy, he likes skiing and he is surprisingly good at it even though he is knock-kneed.

It took him a lot of time, practice and perseverence to become an excellent skier but he DID it. He is out there on the slope, at least three times a week practising. In the summer, when there is no snow, he trains with his friend, Circ who is a runner.

Maple Leaves and Bugs

This maple leaf was picked up in the garden of a monastery in Lorvão, Portugal. The bugs are the stylised version of the insect "Diaperis boleti". You can find them around old tree stumps, decaying logs and in the hollows of trees.
And since I am on the topic of bugs, I'll bore you with some more details. I forgot to mention earlier when I posted this picture ...

... that this nice, shiny insect is called the "Crioceris 14-punctata". It eats the leaf and berry of the asparagus and makes a chirpy noise.

The Shaples

These shape people were made by my youngest daughter at the age of 5. They are called the "Shaples". I "stole" the idea and developed it further.

The Last Autumn Leaves

I went cycling the other day and ended up helping Autumn to do its job. I returned home with a bunch of leaves and after putting them in a plastic bag I put them in the fridge. I keep leaves there when I can't use them on the same day, to keep them fresh. - For painting purposes one needs fresh leaves which are still full of life otherwise the veins won't show on the t-shirt and the print will be blurry. - Unfortunately our fridge is quite small, so there is a strong competition between the fresh milk's and fresh leaves' team. This time the leaves' team won. Sorry, kids!

I like fig tree leaves. Although it is difficult to make prints with them - the reverse side is slightly "fluffy" and it absorbes the paint - they are very durable and they have an unusual shape.
